In
1900, the thriving Roanoke Island village of Manteo had about 100 commercial
businesses along its busy waterfront. By 1979 that number had fallen to
14 and the village was on the verge of collapse. In 1982, the North Carolina State design school responded to an invitation by some of Manteo’s concerned residents to come up with a plan to revitalize the small village. Students from the school interviewed residents to find out what villagers wanted the town to look like and become in twenty years. This effort developed into a twenty year plan that included a boardwalk, performing arts center, marina and a $10 million building complex that included a small English style Inn with apartment's and-condos above the shopping area. A 16th-century replica ship similar to the one that brought the first colonists to Roanoke Island was included in the plans as well as a maritime museum. Even as the plan was being conceived, the number of small businesses remaining in Manteo continued to fall, reaching low ebb of only 7 by 1982. |
|
However,
as the twenty year plan took hold, the village of Manteo began transforming
into a thriving progressive village. Today, a half-mile long tourist-filled
boardwalk anchors the historic village to Shallow Bag Bay. Numerous shops
line its busy sailboat-filled marina and a small replica lighthouse lights
the way into its active harbor. In the arts, outdoor concerts are held in the village on the grounds of Roanoke Island Festival Park. Concerts usually feature a wide variety of entertainment ranging from classical, country and western to Hard Rock. It’s not uncommon to see Manteo residents resting on blankets at these concerts on warm summer evenings drinking wine and eating fine cheeses as they enjoy the open air music. |
