Nighthawk
Harriers Soar In First Meet of Season |

Currituck
High School's Kiel Bollero outkicked 2009 Northeast Coastal Conference
MVP Ryan Wallace of First Flight by three steps on a blistering hot, buggy
day, 3.1-miles around a soy field in Edenton, Aug. 30. But cross country
is a team sport, and the locals from Kill Devil Hills shot down their
cross county rivals, and harriers from Edenton, Northeastern, Gates and
Columbia high schools in the first cross country meet of the season. The lowest score wins in cross country, and when it was over the Nighthawks runners finished 2, 3, 5, 6 and 10 overall, totaling 26 points, to their nearest contender, John Holmes High School in Edenton, which amassed 53 points. It was similar good news for the lady Nighthawks, who powered over several schools, scoring 25 to second place finisher Currituck's 50 points. The first local girl across the line was Senior Sierra Lawson, who was third, and several minutes behind the overall female winner. But again, her teammates rallied tightly around her, sweeping the number 4, 5, 6 and 7 spots and the team victory. In the boy's race, Wallace (finishing in 18:41) was followed by Bryan Robison (19:21), James Seal (20:32), Charles Brady (20:37), and Hunter Brake (22:11). Brake is a newcomer to the team and has quickly established himself scoring contender of the dozen boys on the Nighthawks roster. The top five finishers per team in cross country, score in a meet. The story of the girls victory was strong support from a couple of novices who only started running with the team during voluntary summer workouts a month ago. Freshmen Makenzie Jameson was fifth girl finisher overall, and classmate Kiersten Murphy was seventh, completing the 5 kilometer course in 26:34 and 26:46. Seniors Lawson, Savannah Shultz and Lindsay Fenyak were timed in 25:27, 26:21 and 26:41, respectively. Coach Ronnie Hudgins said it was a good start, but his runners need more leg speed and endurance. He said his front runners also need to develop a deeper desire to win, that must be demonstrated in daily practices and especially over the final few hundred yards to the finish line. Coach Hudgins said the team has a busy 17-meet schedule and there's plenty of time for team members to grow stronger and faster. Hudgins noted that First Flight will host the Northeast Coastal Conference Championship Meet this year on October 20, on its brand new 5K course surrounding the school complex in Kill Devil Hills. Caught
on the Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills around 445PM on August 29, 2010.
The guy with the yellow rod, fuzzy beard, flannel shirt hooked it. The
other guys holding the fish helped him gaff it and hoist it up to the
pier deck. If it wasn't 5 feet, it sure was close. I didn't stay for the
official weight and measures!..........Diana Behling.... see

That number doesn't include millions who have exhausted their unemployment

| U.S.
District Chief Judge Royce Lamberth has ruled that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service did not infringe on the rights of Outer Banks business owners
or impose unnecessary restrictions when it established a critical habitat
to protect an endangered bird, the piping plover. The decision denied
a motion by the Outer Banks preservation group, an advocacy group wanting
more off road vehicle access to Cape Hatteras National Park to take back
some of the protected habitat that was given to the bird from earlier
court decisions. In response to the decision, an official with the Outer
Banks Preservation Association of Buxton told reporters the amount of
money spent on this bird was unforgivable because it affects the livelihood
of local fishermen and the tourist economy. An official with the Defenders
of Wildlife, a group trying to protect the piping plover, said he was
pleased with the outcome because it provides further protection for the
endangered bird. |
